Thiess Bros completes the 104-foot-deep Heifer Creek Road Cutting between Gatton and Warwick – the deepest in Australia at the time. Demonstrating their ingenuity, they deliver project cost and time savings with a cutting, as an alternative to the original tender requirement for a tunnel. A Brisbane newspaper dubs them “the men who eat rocks and stones”.

Dartmouth Dam is on the Mitta Mitta River in Victoria’s north-east. The dam has earth core and rock-filled walls, rising to a height of 180 metres, making it Australia’s highest dam.

Wivenhoe Dam is an earth and rock-fill embankment, 59 metres in height, with a concrete spillway section on which steel crest gates are installed. The crest of the embankment is 2.3 kilometres long.

Thiess signs the first partnering agreement in the industry for the Mt Owen Coal Mine in New South Wales, not far from Muswellbrook – our first coal contract 50 years ago. The contract is for the design, construction and commissioning of the process plant and all mine infrastructure. The subsequent contract to operate the mine in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales ended in 2022, after 29 years.

Leighton Asia won the contract to develop the UHG Coal Mine in 2008. Due to the remote location 600km south of Mongolia’s capital Ulaanbaatar, the haul truck fleet had to be assembled at a border town in China and driven for three and a half days across the desert to reach the mine site. This project, along with all other Leighton Holding mining projects, was transferred to Thiess under the Leighton Holding review in 2014.

Thiess is awarded a six-year $1.3 billion contract to extend mining operations at Burton Coal Mine in Queensland. Bridge construction innovation on Brighton Bypass Project

Thiess Contractors used an innovative method of bridge construction to place the first of the 220-tonne steel box girders required for the Jordan River Bridge. At 165 metres the bridge includes a 70-metre main span - making it the longest single bridge span ever launched in Australia. The launch method was adopted after ancient buried artefacts were discovered in late 2008 and the Jordan River Levee was identified as a significant Aboriginal heritage site.

Thiess and one of Europe’s leading power generators and lignite miners RWE Generation SE form an exclusive partnership to deliver significant savings for high-volume continuous mining applications across the globe. Significant contract extensions at coal mines

Thiess secures three significant contract extensions at mine sites in Queensland and New South Wales. Jellinbah Resources awards Thiess a $550 million contract expansion at the Lake Vermont Coal Mine, near Dysart in Queensland. WesFarmers Resources awards Thiess a four-year contract worth $570 million at the Curragh North Coal Mine near Blackwater in Queensland. Glencore extends Thiess’ contract at the Mt Owen Mine in New South Wales.

Landmark QCLNG contract

Thiess Contractors is awarded a landmark $1.8 billion contract by coal seam gas producer QGC for the construction of gas compression facilities and associated works for the QCLNG project in Queensland's Surat Basin. The new contract significantly expanded Thiess’ role in the project, which now includes construction of all 18 field compressor stations (FCSs) and four central processing plants (CPPs). The new contract replaces and expands the $325 million agreement signed in February 2012 for construction of six FCSs and one CPP.

Major Sydney Water contract

Thiess is awarded a five-year Sydney Water operation and facilities maintenance services contract valued at $175 million. Thiess’ contract with Sydney Water covers 13,000 square kilometres of greater Sydney and Wollongong and provides an essential service to more than 1.8 million homes and more than 4.5 million people. In addition to the massive mechanical and electrical maintenance task, Thiess is also managing a vast network of facilities including 2,500 buildings.

Tunnels to Curtis Island

Thiess delivers a major milestone for Saipem Australia, principal contractor for the Santos GLNG Gas Transmission Pipeline Project, by successfully tunnelling under the Narrows off Gladstone's coast to connect Curtis Island with the mainland. The 4.3 kilometre under-sea tunnel provides a pipeline conduit without disturbing the marine environment.

Venture with Aboriginal Corporation

Thiess enters into a joint venture with Wirlu-Murra Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation (WMYAC) to provide labour services for non-process infrastructure at Solomon mine in Western Australia. The venture develops close working relationship with the Wirlu-Murra Yindjibarndi people and provides commercial and employment benefits for the communities local to the project.

Thiess wins a $115 million contract to continue operating the southern pits of the Dawson Coal Mine in Central Queensland. Thiess continues mining services at the Teguh Sinar Abadi and Firman Ketaun Perkasa concessions, and secures a contract extension Melak Coal Mine in East Kalimantan, Indonesia with additional revenue of $530 million. In a joint venture with local contractor Khishig Arvin, Thiess secures the first underground decline project at the Rio Tinto-operated Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold project in Mongolia's southern Gobi desert. Work will include the construction of a box cut and development of twin declines.

Thiess is awarded a $300 million contract by Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) to expand operations at Sangatta coal mine in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, where operations began in 2003. The Melawan pit will extend coal production by 12 million tonnes and overburden removal by 130 million bcm over four years. Two projects are won in the East Kalimantan region - a $437 million contract at Gunung Bara Utama coal mine and $300 million a contract extension at Mahakam Sumber Jaya coal mine, extending Thiess’ successful 13-year operations at MSJ.

New contract and three major extensions for Queensland

Thiess is awarded a new $480 million four-year contract by QCoal to continue operations at the QCoal Northern Hub located in Queensland’s Bowen Basin. Thiess also secures a $190 million contract extension from Anglo American to continue to provide mining services at Dawson South, also in the Bowen Basin. Coronado awards Thiess a $160 million contract extension to continue providing mining services at the Curragh Coal Mine in Queensland. Thiess has a long record of service at Curragh, having operated at the project since 2004. BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance’s (BMA) provides Thiess with a A$150 million contract extension for Caval Ridge coal mine in Queensland’s Bowen Basin.

Thiess signed a A$277 million contract variation with Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) to increase production at Sangatta in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The variation will increase coal production by an additional 8 million tonnes and overburden removal by 76 million bank cubic metres (bcm) until 2021.

Two new contracts for Western Australia

Thiess is appointed mining services provider for the Iron Bridge Project in Western Australia. Under the initial three-year contract, Thiess will deliver mining and maintenance services and asset management services. Covalent Lithium awards Thiess a four-year contract to deliver mining services at the Mount Holland Lithium Mine in WA. Covalent Lithium is a joint venture between Wesfarmers and Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile (SQM), one of the world’s largest lithium miners.

First Thiess Rehabilitation contract

Thiess Rehabilitation is awarded their first contract, a 3.5 year partnership with Idemitsu Australia’s Ensham Resources to deliver mine rehabilitation solutions that create areas for native bushland corridors and cattle grazing across more than 700 hectares of land. Working with the client at the Ensham Mine, east of Emerald in Queensland, the scope of works includes the detailed design and construction of the final rehabilitated landforms, topsoiling and seed bed preparation, and sowing of both pasture and native tree species. The team will apply industry leading landform design methodologies, as well as the implementation of technology for surveying and seeding to deliver the project.

Balikpapan Support Facility achieves PROPER award

Expansion into nickel in Indonesia

For the first time in our 35 years operating in Indonesia, Thiess expands into nickel. We secure two nickel contracts - a $125 million four-year ore hauling contract with Weda Bay Nickel, and a $240 million nickel mining contract with PT Halmahera Sukses Mineral that will see us mine waste and ore over a 42-month period.

Second contract for Thiess Rehabilitation takes us back to our origins

Thiess Rehabilitation secures their second contract in Australia - a two-year contract with Idemitsu Australia to deliver rehabilitation services at Muswellbrook Coal Mine in NSW. Muswellbrook Coal Mine’s open-cut operations began in 1944 with a contract awarded to Thiess Bros, marking the start of Thiess’ mining business and our presence in the Hunter region.

Autonomy achievements in the Bowen Basin, Queensland

Thiess is the first mining operation in the world to simultaneously deploy Cat® MineStar™ Command for hauling and Command for drilling solutions. We achieved this world-first at a metallurgical coal mine in the Bowen Basin, where we also launched fully autonomous drilling and hauling ops from a purpose-built facility on-site, set up a private LTE network that talks to over 85 assets in the autonomous operating zone and transformed a greenfield site into a fully autonomous operation within 18 months.
